Boko Haram’s official name is Jamā’at Ahl as-Sunnah lid-Da’wah wa’l-Jihād, which translates to “Group of the People of Sunnah for Dawah and Jihad”. Mohammed Yusuf founded the group in 2002. Abubakar Shekau led the group from 2009 until his death in 2021.
The Nigerian military suppressed Boko Haram after the group became more radical, killing its leader, Mohammed Yusuf, in 2009. The group splintered into other groups after Yusuf’s death.
