Valley of the Kings, Egypt, designated a World Heritage site in 1979. Encyclopædia Britannica, Inc. The kings of the New Kingdom (c. 1539–1075 bce), fearing for the safety of their rich burials, adopted a new plan of concealing their tombs in a lonely valley in the western hills behind Dayr al-Baḥrī.
