In 1609, William Hawkins visited the Mughal court to secure a right to trade in Mughal ports during the reign of Jahangir. Hawkins was able to acquire a footing in the court of Jahangir and in due course of time he got so intimate with the “talented drunkard” emperor that no European had ever afterwards.
